how much fluid and what type should i use... and can i fill it through shifter hole when replacing bushings or won't that work?

4 or 5 quarts, mercon V auto trans fluid (yes, you put automatic trans fluid in your manual trans). It can be filled through the shifter hole. Just have the fill plug bolt out so you know when you have enough in.

4-5 quarts is WAY too much fluid for a M5OD trans. It takes closer to 2.75 quarts (3 quarts can fit via the fill hole if the truck is parked leaning to the passengerside and slightly nose-down).

FWIW, I wouldn't put Mercon V into any M5OD made before '08 that doesn't directly specify Mercon V, myself. I've seen some issues with shift quality on older M5ODs that point to the V possibly being too slippery for the synchros.

Regular Mercon ATF (what all pre-'08 M5ODs call for) IS still available in spite of some games Ford played with licensing of the Mercon name (along with some back & forth over whether Mercon V was or was not infact backward-compatible with Mercon). Because of this, regular Mercon fluid is now typically known as "Dex/Merc", and is what I would suggest looking for for your '94 M5OD.

The fluid capacity of the M50D is 5.6 PINTS. About 2.8 quarts.
