'94 buildup

A friend showed up yesterday ... and there it is! Isn't she a beauty?

Removal went very smooth even though I couldn't remove the clutch line or the shifter. The clutch is supposed to be a quick disconnect thingie ... but I couldn't figure out how it worked.
Shifter was weird ... manual says it's a bolt (which goes through), but this is just a threaded shaft, with a nut on it. How on the world do I take it out? I tried nut/counter-nut and locktighting them (pic here http://img256.imageshack.us/img256/622/dsc00403mediummt4.jpg), to no avail. Thing wouldn't budge. I just dropped the trans straight down (you can see the tilted crossmember ... that was hugely practical).
Basically I had a jack under the transmission and 2 straps going from the top frame rails under the transmission. Slid out very easily, didn't drop. I held the balance as my buddy dropped the jack. Slowly but surely we got to the ground. The passenger side centering pin was a bit tough to un-jam, but nothing catastrophic.

Now I just need to know what the connectors on each side of the shifter are ... I guess one is reverse, maybe the other is neutral? I could rewire them properly ...

I'll call Ford today and see how much a new clutch and slave cylinder costs. If it's reasonable enough, I'll get new ones.

You should replace the clutch, pressure plate, and slave cylinder no matter what the cost. Espically the slave cylinder; they are prone to leak and cause problems.

Put some paint on that thing!

Just measured, clutch is toast anyways. Grrrr. 260$.

Clutch assembly. The fingers on the pressure plate look just fine. Definitely not bent or broken, not even grooved.

Clutch plates. Looking good, not glazed, I can still read the F and stuff.

Let's measure. Manual says at least 1/16 (0.0625)

...

Dammit. Yeah, it reads 0.0455.

Flywheel ... cracks all over the place. Not sure I can resurface that. :(

At least I'm done with the Exploder, and can start disassembling the Ranger as I hunt for parts to get this clutch mess up to par.

I would get a new flywheel. They are only $60 at O'Reilly Auto Parts.

Oops, I just came back from the shop to have it resurfaced. It will have to be fine, I guess.

I went with Luk clutch kit as well. 230$ shipped instead of 260 for the clutch + 150$ for the slave ... makes for quite a difference!

PS - thx for your thread in the tech section, it's still incomplete yet as been of much help and guidance.:icon_thumby:

not a problem. I haven't had the chance to complete it yet. I am going to complete it after I do the swap on my BII. That way I can take pictures and so forth since I forgot to take pictures during the swap on my Ranger.

The shifter is removed from the tranny by removing 3 t50 torx bolts holding the metal ring to the tranny. You should be able to see this as soon as you lift up the rubber shifter boot.

yukon, thx, indeed, there they are. I just thought I was supposed to remove the big bolt instead of those 3. That's what the manual said anyways.

Interesting fact of the day, I used a beeping device to determine that the little red connector at the base of the shifter on the driver's side (you can kinda see it in the previously posted transmission picture) is my reverse sensor. Woot seems to be an appropriate comment at this point.
Still no clue what the other connector (on the other side) is for.

Ranger is in! Front wheel removed for the Wow factor. It looks like I'm doing serious business like this. Also removed the bumper to make sure my winch installation plans did not work because I'd forgotten how little room there is.

Gutted the interior. Quick job, removed the seats, 3 plastic trims and take carpet out.

Carpet weighed approx 34 tons because of all the water in it (thanks winter!). Which also explains all the rust everywhere.
dsc00418mediumfs1.jpg

But hey, it's just surface rust, no biggie, right?
dsc00420mediumhr4.jpg

Right. ****.
dsc00419mediumvf8.jpg

The offending carpet that liked to keep water in the corners. Grounded and sleeps outside.

I'll let the interior dry properly, then I'll clean it and get going on those pedals until the clutch arrives next week.

The bolt on the shifter.....Take the nut off, and thread it onto the other side. The nut is used to pull the bolt out. if it doesent fall out, put the nut back on the other side just on the tip of the threads and give it a tap with a hammer.

Cut out some of the rust ... now it's visible how the rotting formed. Thanks stupid hole in the fender.

Time to bring out the duct tape.
