Hey folks, my girlfriend's dad has a 94 3.0 5spd Ranger with the electric t-case and he's having 4wd problems. He can use 4-low under certain circumstance but not 4-high. If its put in 4-high it makes a nasty grinding sound and doesnt work at all. If it is put in 4-low, it works but only in this order. Neutral - 1st - 4-low works - clutch - let off clutch - doesnt work - neutral - first - 4-low works . and so on and so fourth. and when 4-low doesn't work, it makes that nasty grinding sound as well. It sounds like it was coming from the hubs. it has those stock auto hubs like these

if you guys want to hear the grinding sound, click the following link http://www.axcessmypics.com/photos/photo04/26/92/93e877939d1f.wav Does he need new hubs? Any input is appreciated!

if ya hear a grinding noise from the front, i would say the front hubs are gone ( what mine sounded like when i blew mine)

get some Warn manual hubs and i'm sure you would be good to go:icon_thumby:

Thanks, anybody else? I need somethin more conclusive than a noise

True, but does it sound like the hubs?

Yup,,replace the hubs with manuals,,or you can maybe take them apart and clean them up but the grinding will come back, they really do suck!

also check the ujoints on the axles but most likly the hubs

Bring it by the house and I'll take a look at it for ya.

Replace with Manuals, best money I spent on my 97 ranger. I recomend Warns over Mile Markers, did blow one Mile Marker the first time around. The Warns have been great (knock on wood) for about 6-7 years.

Also was very easy to convert, I'm not the greatest machanic and I did myself pretty easy. Someone told me on here when I did it, that if I could change oil, I could replace autos with manuals and they were correct!!
