First off, I'm new here, new to Rangers, and new to mechanic work in general, so if I have any terminology, or details, or mechanics wrong, please correct me so I don't continue in my ignorance.
That being said, I recently purchased a 94 4.0 XLT Extended cab (pictures to follow.) It has 137k miles and is quite clean inside and out. The bad news is it has sat for the better part of a year and a half. It's running and driving well, but she's definitely asking for help. I'm sure I'll be coming to y'all with lots of questions, but for today, this is what I've got:
I noticed while driving it that I had to push hard on the gas to get any power, so after some research I discovered the throttle cable stretch problem and took a look at the cables. At the pedal the throttle cable was indeed loose and needed two zip ties to be pulled taught.
While I was there, I noticed another cable attached to the throttle. I did not know what it was, but it was much MUCH more lose. It would not engage until the last 1/2" or so of pedal stroke. I traced the cable to the transmission and started googleing. My search turned up so cursory references to the Throttle Valve and the kickdown, some instructions for how to adjust the cables on other vehicles, and warnings about transmission damage.
So, here are my questions:
What is the precise function of a TV/kickdown and are they the same thing?
If not, what's the difference and which am I looking at?
How should I go about diagnosing the severity of the problem?
How serious of an issue is this/ how quickly do I need to find a solution to this problem.?
Thanks for your input, if you need any more information please ask and I'll answer to the best of my ability.
