Hi all,
I have a '94 4.0 that had a valve break and shatter the piston.
I have everything needed to fix this problem except the one broken piston.
All other cylinders look great and I see no reason to replace them for posterity. This motor has 110K miles, does not burn any oil and does not smoke at all.

I can get one standard piston ordered from my local auto parts dealer.

Is there any reason I REALLY would need to replace the whole set of pistons? I do have a whole set of rings that I am considering replacing on all of them, but I sure can do one easier than six and I need to get this thing back on the road.

Whatcha think? Words of wisdom?

Thanks

I would check to make sure that the cylinders aren't out of round before doing anything.

if there is no damage to the cylinder wall then you should be fine with just 1 piston and new rings.

Cylinders are round according to the caliper.

Thanks

Amazing if the cylinder didnt suffer any damage. You would want to hone the cylinder for the new rings to break in correctly, other than that you should be good to go.

I know! I expected to have to scrap the whole thing, but I looked pretty closely and didn't see any scratches or anything, so I figured I'll go for it. I just need another 10-20K out of this truck. I'll check again though.

you know on my older ranger, 83 to be exact, i had 1 piston lose compression. Turns out i'm pretty sure i had a exaust leak and it wore the rings out. Anyways in the head i just replaced valve guides and replaced the 1 piston that lost compression and put new rings on the rest of the motor, and about a month and a half later my motor started having a rod bearing knock. I think the change in compression made a weaker link blow out, not really sure the details as i sold the truck instead of fixing it, didn't even tear the motor out. Your truck is obviously newer then what mine was but just thought i'd share what happened to me.
