New guy here, been reading for a while, but first time poster. I just aquired a 94 4.0 4x4 5spd ranger with roughly 250k miles on it. It's a one owner truck and been very well maintained. The transmission though has a problem. I was told, by the owner, that he was a towing a boat and was in 4th gear and downshifted into 3rd, going up a hill. When he went to go back into 4th it wouldn't go, so he limped it back home in 3rd. The clutch disengages properly and the shifter moves freely but even in what should be neutral if you let out on the clutch the truck still moves forward. The kicker however is you can put the truck in reverse and it goes into reverse and will back up fine. Any suggestions on what the problem is?

Umm, the transmission?

It doesn't matter. Once it's behaving badly, it's almost certainly unrepairable. You repair whining. Only a teardown will tell for sure, but it will be cheaper to replace it with a good junkyard transmission.

That sounds like a problem with the shifter to me.

It'd be worth pulling the top cover off to have a look inside. Of course with that kind of mileage, if it's anything beyond a simple retaining clip coming off or something similar, it'd probably still be worth it to get another trans with less miles on it.

Whining nearly always means the whole thing is toast though.

Thanks for the response.. That what I was thinking.. From what was told there was no warning no whining on noises of any kind, and no noises when it happened either it just would come back out of 3rd... I'll know more in a couple weeks when I get back up to TN to check it out.
