Up front, thanks guys for entertaining my question. Just landed a '93 4x4 auto truck with head gasket blown. What other years 4.0 engine is a direct swap? Usually on the v8 swap forum so the direct replacement stuff is new to me. Thanks.

Another engine for a 1993 4.0?

Does your 1993 have EGR?

Some '93s do others don't.

Either way you'll need to find a 1993 or 1994 Ranger or Explorer as a donor

And the differences determine what you'll need to swap over from your "dead" engine to your replacement...

1993-1994 are basically the same in regards to pistons and cylinder heads and injectors, but there are some minor but important differences in the details....

The 1993 is a "batch fire" engine that uses the same injectors as the 1994 SEFI engine.

The 1994 SEFI engines have EGR and the cam position sensor.
the 1993 do not

The injector harness is different as is the main engine harness (and of course the PCM is different).

some 1993s with California emissions had EGR & SEFI (always found together)
Somewhat more 1993 Explorers had it.

generally speaking ALL 1994 explorers had it, but in years of looking I've found exactly ONE non-Cali 4.0 Ranger with a SEFI/EGR engine.

Your Mileage May Vary...:)

Allen, is it only the harness from the 93 that goes onto newer 4.0s? what I've been told and near as I can tell, the 98 4.0 I have in storage is physically the same except maybe the intake and flywheel.

Slim why not just fix the head?

Thanks Allan. It appears I have dodged a bullet. Pulled the heads and all is well, just a head gasket replacement and I believe I'll be good. Although, I managed to break the California emission cam synchronizer plug so I had to order that one...grrr.

It looks like it outta be fun to change out, from what I've been reading.

1995 up engines have more differences and several, sensors are different.
As-in electrically different as well as physically different connectors...

Usually 1995-up engines have a plastic upper intake, they also have a thermal isolator
between the fuel rail and lower intake (this is a good thing!)

1995-up engines also have different cylinder heads, which have smaller combustion chambers designed for more swirl and the pistons have a larger dish to compensate...

Additionally sometime in the middle of 1996 ford changed the borttom end of the engine, lighter pistons and a significantly lighter crankshaft, and engines updated this way can typically be identified by counting the flywheel bolts, these motors have what ford called
a "light-weight" rotating assembly....
