Hey all, I just recently did a fuel pump, plugs + wires, and a fuel filter and now my trucks dying as I go into first or reverse. I can get her to go, but with a lot more gas than usual. I'm inclined to think it's the clutch, but heard from the last owner that the cats could be clogged. Any advice is much appreciated.

fuel filter backwards?

Was it working before you did all that?

Why was all that done, just a tuneup, or was it running poorly overall, etc?

It had been running fine for a while before. I let it sit about a week and it started doing that.

The fuel pump had been giving me a hard time (intermittent poor starting) and so I did both that and the fuel filter.

any chance you replaced just the pump on the sending unit and you used a real bosch pump? (ford used bosch on OEM units for many many years)... if not, then chances are more than likely you got a bad sender.... people here keep preaching this more and more, "new is new, not necessarily good"...

Before yanking the sender though standard diagnostics... what kinda pressure do you have on the fuel rail.

As far as the PO saying the cats could be clogged either A) he is total guessing or B) he did something that would clog the cats and knew it.... might as well start soaking the exhaust bolts in penetrating oil now hoping that by the time we get there you have a chance of breaking em loose.

I used a O'reilys special. I guess it's worth it for me to throw a Bosch one in there? How would I go about testing for fuel rail pressure?

grab the oldest/junkiest tire pressure gauge you got and find the schrader valve on the fuel rail (has a cap on it).

I tell you the junkiest gauge you have because the fuel once it touches the diaphram shortens the life of the gauge a bunch... it wont ruin it in a week or kill it right that second, but it will take years off it's service life... I marked the worst of mine "Gas" and it is the only one I use on fuel rail.

that is in the engine bay, at the end of the hard line past the last injector... I just realized I never said where it is, and if you aren't real familiar might start hunting all over the fuel lines.

If you haven't pitched the old one in the trash, hang on to it... the new one is likely to fail within a couple years and you are way better off repairing & rebuilding the old time after time after time.
