hey guys well after a crappy morning... we were bringing our camper up to a hunting spot about 70 miles away... well theirs some big hills an we were towing it with a 93 explorer sport auto.... well after a few of the hills it started to spray a lil tranny fluid.... then on a bigger hill it was really spraying some fluid so we pulled over. checked the dip stick an it was DRY.. so i went an got 4 quarts of tranny fluid put some in an started the truck up an it was just coming right out from under the truck.. looked like it was coming out between the bell housing. so we made some phone calls an had a buddy come pick up the camper an we let the truck sit for a while an started it an it was fine.. wasn't leaking or any thing.. could it have just gotten hot an started to leak or what would cause this sort of problem? the camper was only a 20footer weighed about 2k-2200 pounds

I posted in the tranny forum an wasnt getting any feedback so i posted here instead..

im guessing the tranny is a A4LD? from what i kno they are problematic and leak

i am not that familiar with this setup but i would check the tranny cooler lines that go to the radiator if it has them.

When transmissions get overheated they tend to build up pressure. Sometimes this pressure can push past seals and cause a pretty serious leak.

Usually once it cools down and is refilled it will be fine. However, you now know that you had it hot, and heat is not good on them.. I would recommed finding someone to tow it home for you.

Cross posting is generally frowned upon.

The A4LD DOES have a vent line that runs from the top of the trans up near the top bellhousing bolts and then kinda back down along the "spine" of the transmission.

I'll almost bet you that a mud dauber wasp decided that the end of your vent line was a good place to build a nest....

Yes, the little glob of mud with a larva inside it will block the vent sufficiently
to make the pressure blow past the seals.

The transmission MAY be fine.

thanks guys for the replys.. now allan .. if that "vent" is clogged would you assume once i unclog it it should be fine? i mean really it wasnt having a hard time pulling it untill we hit the really steep hill..

It's stories like these that make me so glad I have an M5OD in my explorer. I've had much bigger trailers behind it and never had a problem. Also have 150,000 on the stock clutch and no signs of letting go any time soon.

I have one that suffered the same problem three years ago in a 4.0AWD Aerostar
and it's still going strong.

But the trans had the vent problem a couple of days after it was CAREFULLY rebuilt by my brother for his wife to drive to Maine, so you can safely say the trans was "professored" to death
