Hey all,

This summer I'm looking to pull the motor on my 93 3L and do a rebuild. I know its burning oil bad I think its got a leak some where.

I've never rebuilt an engine but I'm pretty confident I have the resources (tools, friends, and beer.)

What do I need to be looking for when i pull this thing out.

There are some rebuild kits on rock auto with new pistons for around $350.

I only want to pull this thing once so what else do i need to replace when I'm in there. What can I leave alone.

I've browsed the forums and tech articles a little and i havent really seen a "how to" or Guide on 3l rebuilds just general information.

All the help is appreciated.

Thanks!

The general information will apply to your 3.0.

Id reccommend...
Having the block dipped/checked for cracks
Honed/bored to clean up cylinder bores
Replace rings/wrist pins
Having the crank turned, new rod/main bearings
New oil pump
New timing set
Have heads milled
New cam/cam bearings
Valves ground/reseated
New valve springs/keepers
Pushrods/lifters
Any and all associated gaskets...

If you are ripping it out and only wanna do it once, might as well do everything. Because a part operating at 50% will quickly self destruct when its surrounded by parts operating at 100%.

I agree with what Rusty wrote. Honestly, you could probably hold off on the rebuild kit and just work with the machine shop. You'll certainly need a full gasket set, but the hard parts are a question mark until you get everything torn apart. You may find crank issues that require a particular bearing size, and you may find that the cylinders don't require a new bore. A hone job will save you a good chunk over bore+hone and new pistons.
