In the owners manual for my 1996 after switching from 4x4 back to 2wheel drive you are suppose to ( BACK UP SEVERAL FEET TO "PROPERLY" DISENGAGE THE AUTO HUBS )

As for the proper way to ( ENGAGE ) in my owners manual for my 1996 I can ( ENGAGE ) the 4x4hi system on the go with speeds up-to 55mph.

The "ONLY'' way to engage 4x4lo is to stop, put your foot on the brake, put in neutral, switch the switch to 4x4lo,put truck in drive, take foot off brake and go. same thing to disengage 4x4lo.

When first backing up you will ALWAYS hear 2 clicks from the hubs just as soon as you back up,this is the hubs disengaging.

These are all FACTS taken from ( MY ) 1996 manual.

Shift on the fly SPEEDS may vary from certain years but on the 1996 it clearly says ( up-to 55 mph )

If you want FACTS straight from ford then I would suggest reading your owners manual about using the 4x4 system in YOUR truck.
