Hello All,

I am doing a auto to manual swap in my 92 Ranger 3.0 v-6. I have located a 94 Ranger 3.0 5 speed 4x4 being parted out. Will the ECM work with my year? The rear engine backing plate I think is same. I may go ahead and get the 5 speed and transfer case also just the transfer case will be thrown away as I do not need that part.

IDK the changes on the 3.0 over the years, so can't help there. IF you want to use the transmission in a 2wd truck, keep the transfer case and get the rear driveshaft. It'll fit under the truck and unless you wanna hook up a way to shift it into low range, can be ignored...

No I just going to keep the 5 speed as a parts tranny. I know I have to change tail shaft and housing which is no big deal doing rebuild on trans.

With all the trouble getting Ford to help track down part numbers and changes I decided to just go back with A4LD. Now I have been told there are 2 different bell housing spacer plates for the 3.0 to manual transmission. And no one seems to know the year or reason behind the change.

Ford has drastically changed part numbers thru the years for parts, I've had challenges myself with my 94 3.0 5spd ranger. I had to locate parts from 93-97 3.0 parts etc.

I'm sure you are aware that the back plate is different from an auto to a manual transmission. One won't work on the other for various reasons. The change may have come in 1998? It shouldn't matter if it's a 2wd or 4wd engine back plate it should be good as it comes from a manual transmission. I would say the back plate from the 94 manual transmission back plate will be good on your 92 3.0.

A 94 ecm will not work on your 92, different wiring, sensors, etc. You need a ecm from a 91-92 3.0 5spd ranger. I would locate one from a yard or car-part.com or online. I would stay away from any rebuilt ones from auto part stores, as those are junk.

I've had to do that with my 94 3.0 5spd ranger. I've found a couple of extras. The current one is from a 94 3.0 5spd I found 7 years ago, same truck the engine, wiring harness, steering column, other parts came from.

A 5spd behind the 3.0 is a great modification to have done..

The only parts I have not been able to get my hands on is a 3.0 5 speed rear engine plate and steering column covers for manual trans. All the pick and pull Rangers I have looked at King Kong beat me to the column covers and they were busted to bits.

Those steering column covers are sorta difficult to find in good condition. You can look on ebay and find them, also ask the seller if they would sell it separately. I've asked sellers who are parting out rangers for certain parts and i was able to get what I needed at times. How I learned to source from other resources .

The 89-94 b2, Explorer, ranger steering column is the same. Also look for those who have a manual transmission.

The back plate should be good from 91-97 3.0 5spd.

I keep a watch on FB Marketplace,Craigslist etc to see if there is a 91/92 Ranger manual column floating around. Now I know I can go back as far 89 so may help in finding the rascal but 30 year old plastic very brittle so it breaks easily.
