I've got a '92 Town Car I'm trying to sell so I don't want to put a lot of cash in it... the power steering fluid leaks out like a sieve, did a well needed oil change today and looked around, the pump is dry on the outside as are the hoses, the only thing with fluid on it was the pitman arm. Does this mean the steering box output shaft seal? and is it as simple as removing the pitman arm and changing the seal?

Thanks.

Pitman seals are hit or miss in my opinion. Problem is with the shaft itself, some get a wear groove at the point the seal contacts it. replace the seal...seal catches the groove just right...and the seal gives out. If memory serves? Part of the rebuilding process companies use would be to put a sleeve on the shaft that makes it smooth again. Not something a home mechanic can really do effectively or can even find the part.

Best bet would be to contact a few bone yards and see if anyone has a gear box in decent shape. The one for our BII came to $75. About $50 less then a rebuilt unit, and is doing just fine.
