Hello all, this is my first post so hopefully I'm in the right forum. Recently I've been having problems with my Ranger sometimes dying on my when I press the gas. I have changed the spark plugs (5 out of 6 of them-couldn't get to last one), and changed the fuel filter. I have a repair guide for 83-92 vehicles and it says it could be a hose or vacuum as well, or perhaps the fuel pump. I was looking around under the hood, and I found a hose that is broken (in the picture attached). There is a broken wire that you can also see in the picture, and in the second picture you can see where that wire attaches. I'm not sure if this is what is suppose to attach to that broken hose since it is a wire; it's not hollow....or if there is another hose that is suppose to attach to this. I'm a total newb when it comes to doing repairs on this, so I was hoping someone could help me. I'm not sure if this broken hose is why my truck is dying.

Thanks!

I think I fixed the problem. That other cord was a vacuum hose, I thought it was a wire because it had something stuck in the middle that looked like wire. When I was messing with it, it fell out. I superglued the hose back in there, and so far so good.

Your gas pedal must be on backwards, flip it over and give it a shot.

I had the same problem with my 1988 GTA Bobcat. Gas pedal was on backwards so whenever I pressed it I got negative throttle. Don't even get me started on what the brake pedal did...

Haha...

Well that's how much of a newb I am...Ha. Anyways, that wasn't the problem...the vehicle is still dying on me. It will run fine for awhile, then sometimes just die when I press the gas. I'm going to try some fuel treatment again. I checked the air filter and it's fine. I'm running out of ideas. I might have to bring it to a mechanic.....sigh....

I would try to borrow a fuel pressure gauge to see if the pump is providing the right pressure. I don't know what system your truck is so you'll have to make sure the gauge is able to read your system. A carb would be [iirc] around 4 to 8 psi and efi would be 20 to 80 psi. I'm throwing out #'s, you will have to check to see exactly where your pump pressure is supposed to be at. EG; My 4.0l is @ 40psi. When my truck had symptoms similar to your truck it was at 22psi. It ended up being a hose in the gas tank was cracked; the previous owner used the wrong type of hose for a fuel pump replacement.
Good luck,

Richard
