I got a 92 4.0 5 speed, 4x4 with auto 4x4. i got the truck for a parts truck. When i got the truck they said that the clutch was gone on it. The motor runs great, but when i put it into gear ... nothing. Every other truck i have had i could still move it with the clutch worn out. Its the same in every gear push clutch in and let it out.... nothing. i have never had this problem before.
If any one has any ideas of what might be the problem i would appreciate what you think.

Thank You

Bill

Depends on how worn out the clutch is. If it is completely toasted then you may not get anything at all.

Transfer case may be in Neutral, it is not a selection on the transfer case electric shift but it can be between shifts and stuck in Neutral.

When you try to shift into 4wd low do the lights change?

Even if clutch disc is too thin shifter should move slightly when you let out the clutch with engine running, there may not be enough friction to move vehicle but you should still see/feel shifter move.

Good find on the manual Explorer they are few and far between

Hi Ron, thanks on the find. There are no lights on by the shift switches. How would i go about getting it out of Neutral? The motor is runs smooth starts up no problem. its just that i have never had this type of problem before. and any help would be great.
Thank you

You will need this link when you get around to fixing those lights: http://www.therangerstation.com/tech_library/4wd_control_module.html

It could just be a fuse.

This link is for the Shiftster: http://theshiftster.com/installation-installation-instructions-shiftster

Play the video, it shows you how to remove the shift motor(don't cut the wires, lol) and generally where 2wd, 4wd, and 4wd low are when rotating the shift shaft, you can use vise grips.

But before the above I would put trans in gear and jack up the back wheels then with bell housing inspection plate removed, spin the drive line(wheels) and see if clutch disc is turning, if it is then transfer case is in gear, and motion is being transferred through the transmission to the input shaft.
So trans and transfer case are good, clutch disc is too thin.

If disc doesn't spin with the driveline/wheels then transfer case could be in neutral or trans is bad
