Im getting ready to rebuild my 92 4.0 OHV. I want to use the stock crank, pistonson the bottem. On the top I am going to use a "comp cam 422" but I want to know if I can use the stock lifters and pushrods or if i need new ones? Also about how much does it cost to have the heads ported, polished, cleaned and have a valve job done and the block boiled what do you think the total machine shop bill would be? Any suggestions on the overall prosess?
Thanks,
Dusty

or if there is a good inexpensive way to clean it up for paint from home?

Hi, no idea where you live for costing out a rebuild. Or your shop rates around your town. here is what I can offer thou, after redoing a build up with a 410. I put in new lifters with the shaft, my thinking is... why take the chance.... I needed to get custom pushrods made up from a company in Oregon... (name slips mind at moment and i am sure someone will chime in on this)

In this build I am in for about $2000. and this includes oils hoses belts. I am in Canada so I am sure you may be able to get better deals on things if you live in the states. the pushrods alone cost me 160 after i was hit with duties.

as for how much your build will cost depends on how much heavy shopping around you are prepeared to do. As for the heads P&P there is a great "how to DIY" in tech section I followed this and saved about 250 in this. all i can suggest is READ and READ more and do your leg work to shop around. good luck with the homework. oh, and the paint and prep was done by myself and gf. the block & heads were just taken to a shop for a high power wash. didnt really cost much i think around a 100.00.

Thanks, I saw your thread that said you were having problems with your engine after the build, did you figure out what the problem was? ps i live in AK so the prices are not real good.

Not 100% on the prob fix, however, I haven't placed in the (shop) cleaned and calibrated injectors yet. Tried to cheap out on getting this done when I placed the motor back together... kicking myself in the ass now for here comes another 2 hours tearing it apart to replace these injectors. had surgery last week and haven't had the get up and go to pull wrenches... i feel positive thou that the cleaned injectors will help (can't hurt that is for sure) if this doesn't 100% fix the overburn i will be taking the truck to a custom shop to let they scope the motor.. i have had enough with second guessing... pay them a couple hun and be done with it. will save that in fuel costs.... lol

where is AK? you in a small town with limited shops/parts places to shop around at?

yes the power gain is nice, however, she isn't tuned 100% so with that tiny prob i know it will be better :) when you place your foot into her she will say "hello"

AK= Alaska! so there is a power difference?! thats good i kinda wondered about that

Wow alaska... I am sure that you can get shops and garages there to give you quotes for all the things you are needing/wanting to get done. (unless you happen to be in a 2 stop light town) then you could be limited. :( trust me I have lived in 2 stop light towns many years back... and arrrhg they can be a pain in the ass for limiting places to get work done or parts.

When i built it up I wasn't expecting to be turning a 1/4 in lightning times... i built her up with the idea of wanting that little bit more, did I achieve this? yes... I will be there after these last couple hurdles. :)

Thanks for the input! If you have any pix if the build i would love to see them!

sure i have a few pics of from there to here. you will have to give me a bit to load them into photopuket. they used to be able to load tiny thumbs in here a while back but i have noticed that you can't do this any more... so it will take a bit to load them. i didn't take actual pics of "ok here in goes the oil pump... liftewrs... etc... but i do have pics of the before / during / after of the trucks and motors, if these are what you are looking for.

yeah anything would be great! I know quite a bit about cars and fixing them just dont know much about rebuilds.

oh, incase you may have missed some advice I had given to another in here about building up a motor, here is another thread with some things i had learned about doing this. Not saying my info is laid in stone or anything just a couple things that i found to help along the way.

here is the paint scheme we are going to give this truck over the winter. We do all our own paint and body work. Angie is a great painter on cars trucks and bikes. the flame job will be the same over the fenders. these are traditional flames and when we lay them we are going to be going inbetween the tips of these with natural flames to give it that oh wow effect. then on the bottom parts of these flames we will be doing a neat trick called bubble dry effect.
