I want to rebuild the 4.0 in my 1996 4x4 Ranger. I was going to either build an engine to replace it so I dont have down time, or put another one in so I can rebuild whats in it. I found a 1992 4.0 from a 2wd. Wondering if I could run it for a while in my 96 with the 96 computer. I need to call jet performance and see what the difference is between the 92 and 96 modules. I cant use a 92 computer because my 4r55e transmission didnt come out until 95.

Shouldn't be a problem.

4.0l didn't get the Cam Syncronizer until '97
Fuel systems are both 30-40psi version
'92 will have the EDIS-6 module for running the spark but by '96 that was part of the Computer
Crank position sensor should be the same, just plugged into computer instead of EDIS-6 module.

May have to swap upper intakes, can't remember about sensor changes on those years.

The '92 will have OBD I and your '96 OBD II, as far as I know engine sensors didn't change parameters.

Not sure about the oil pans, but if you have an oil level sensor I would swap them.

The 4.0 got a cam synchro in 93 for Cali, 94 for Federal, and then it changes sizes in either 95 or 96.

The other thing to watch is the head and piston changes in 95. It went to the "fastburn" design, and I have heard of issues from running that engine on the older computers. Not sure what would happen pairing an older engine to that software.

the 92 is not EGR, the 96 probably is. also, there's some difference in fuel injectors. i dont know if they are compatible or not, but they are definitely different.

you could always switch whatever parts you needed, it would just take a little longer to get the engine swap done.

I would strip the 92 down to the valve covers pull the 96 4.0 tear that one down to valve covers, upper intake ect.. And remove the engine wiring harness from 96, injector wires, coil pack ect. Put the 96 intake and harness on the 92 engine, and drop it back in, you might have to swap the drivers side exhaust manifold from the 96 also for the egr port.. Good luck!!
