i have a 92 ranger that had 2.3 motor in it with blown head gasket. i bought a junkyard motor that was suppose 2 b out of a 93 but i believe it is a bit newer than that. the cps sensor is on top of the crankshaft pully instead of behind it on the old motor. i had to change out all the fuel injection intake stuff and everything else. so far everything has been working out so far except for the cps sensor wires. i have spliced them to the old ones from the original harness, but i still aint gettin any fire to the plugs when i turn it over. is there any way to make this motor work if it is newer than a 93?? any ideas would be helpfull

93 or 94 will work. i think you'll have problems getting 95 or newer to work.

Do you have the dist hole in your new motor?Or a plug?Or cam sensor? If you do,then it is not newer than a 94.What kind of intake was on it?

this kinda reminds me of what it was like swappin a 91 2.3 dual plug motor into my 87 ranger..

it has the dual spark plugs. the only diff. i founf inthe block is cps sensor and the newer motor has a sensor behind the timing belt. the old motor did crank and run with the bad head gasket so i know all the computer and coils are all good. now it has 3 wires goin into coil pack and 2 got power and im guessin the third is the pulse wire but im not shure.

did you see 4b316's question? this will help narrow down what year motor we are dealing with. after 95 the completely blocked off the hole where the distributor used to be. up to 94 the hole was still there with either a plug or a cam position sensor depending on what state you live in and what model the truck was. The hole would be on the drivers side towards the front of the vehicle under the fuel rail.

the newer motor i have does not have the distribitor hole on it... is there anyway of moaking this motor work???

You can take the 94 crank sensor off the 94 block and make a template from the front of the block where it bolts on and put the template on the front of the 95 engine and drill and tap the holes. We,ve done this to a couple of motors and it works good.Works best if you have both motors out and sitting on the flywheels.Has to be pretty percise as it being off will allow the vanes to hit the sensor and breaking it.It is very thin right there, about a 1/4 inch thick so you will drill right thur.put some grease on the drill and when you tap.Put some silicone on the bolts when you bolt it on.Take your time.
