Hey everyone...
I have a 91 STX (4.0 A4LD 4WD). I was driving along at about 55mph. The transmission didn't slip at all, I hadn't had any transmission problems before this. Then all of a sudden I heard a pop, then it started making a hissing sound. RPM's went way up, it just dropped out of gear. There I was dead in the water. Checked every gear R OD D 2 1. Nothing, no movement at all. I actually thought I broke a U-Joint on the rear shaft, but nope. I checked the trans fluid, and it wasn't even on the stick. Went and got more fluid, filled it up, cycled through all the gears, nothing. So, I had a friend tow me home. Before this happened, I have been having a few "vacuum related" issues. For some reason I blew a couple different hoses off the vacuum tree on the manifold, the power brake booster blew out, and then it blew another hose off the tree, and then this happened. I'm thinking that I blew the vacuum modulator on the transmission. But I have read conflicting stories as to whether or not this would cause a complete loss of motion. Any insight would be great and/or other suggestions as to what the problem could be. Thanks.
