91 Ranger 4 Cyl 5 Speed to 94 Ranger V6 4.O 5 Speed.Will it work?

Can I use a 94 Ranger 4.0 M50D 5 Speed Transmission in a 91 Ranger 4 Cyl 5 Speed?

Both are 2 Wheel Drive?

Please Help if you can.

And yes I looked into the Tech section and have been reading posts to no avail. So either I missed it or am doing the search wrong.

No. You can use a trans from a 2.5 or 2.3 truck. The 4.0/2.9 uses a different pattern than the 2.3/2.5. and the 3.0 uses yet another....

Thank You PlumCrazy. I guess I am SOL. As I picked up a rebuilt M5OD from a 94 Ford Ranger 4.O as I was pretty sure I read where others used the trans for an upgrade as from what I understood the difference was an extra bolt hole in the bell housing to enable the trans to be used on two types of bolt patterns.

That extra bolt is a 4.0 OHV vs SOHC difference.

You can swap the internals from one trans to the other though. The 4.0 has a numerically lower 1, 2, and 3

That sounds Backwards. As logically it would seem that they would have higher gears for the larger engine. Not visa versa lol.

The starter is of no concern as I will be using the Starter for the Diesel. And plan to machine the Diesel Flywheel down and re-drill it to mate up to the pressure plate for the Ranger.

Nope. The 4.0 got the "close ratio" trans. Everything else got the numerically higher 1-3 to make up for the lack of torque output from the gutless powerplant. I am running the 2.3 gears in my 4.0 trans so I can slow.lol
