My son's '91 2.3 is just giving us fits trying to iron out this starting problem.
We found the fuel pressure was only 30# and dropped immediately to zero when the initial pump on sequence was over. We replaced the pump and now have 40 # which drops to 36# and holds. We checked the spark on the passenger side and it didn't look very blue so we replaced the plugs, plug wires and coil. The ISC valve seemed to be working intermittantly so we replaced that also. Then we replaced the ignition switch which had an intermittant contact for the heater blower and A/C just off the cranking position. Also replaced the key cylinder which bound up. The previous owner had replaced the vacuum hoses and we found several quite loose on their barbs. We clamped all loose hoses.
The truck now starts beautifully when cold (Arizona cold that is (90 degrees
in the morning right now). If you run it and get the engine up to temp. and shut it off, it cranks and cranks but does not fire until you floor the accellerator pedal. If you floor the pedal right away it still cranks more than normally but starts a little quicker.
My son says that when he takes the truck out on the freeway it sometimes starts missing and makes a noise like a belt has snapped and is thrashing around under the hood. He seemed to think that maybe it's the EGR valve malfunctioning. Not wanting to throw money at this problem I thought maybe someone here has had similar problems and might lend some advice. Would appreciate your comments.
