89 ranger SAS build

Ok, I finally had it with the 2.3 its done, I am not putting any more money in it to keep it running. I am now looking for a 4.0L Maybe an explorer or ranger that is cheap off craigslist or something. Would like to find an explorer, maybe this one
http://fortwayne.craigslist.org/cto/2078947127.html

Waiting to hear back from the seller. Did the sports come with the 3.0 or were all explorers a 4.0? Did the sports come with the 31 spline 8.8 also?

I think all of them came with the 4.0 and 31 spline, I could be wrong though

all explorers were 4.0, unless it had V8 option and yeah i really think all had the 31 spline

31 spline and some sort of 4.0 or 5.0/4.6 with sploders....but 4.6 versions are irs so not really something most want.

damn dude i am thinkin of getting that thing

That rear axle is probably drum, but it should be 31 spline with a T-lock.

I would do it. Do you have to do the dash swap when you do a 4.0 swap?

I wouldnt think so. Sure as hell hope not. If so i mignt just scrap my truck and swap axles under the explorer.

Have a question, had it in 4 hi today on the way home, roads were snow covered, driving about 35mph and heard growling from either the transfercase or the rear axle. Just noticed it today. Anyone have any ideas what it could be?

my guess would be the case since you don't get it in 2wd

Mine growls when its cold but after driving her a bit, doesnt make a sound. I think its my outer axle bearings making the sounds but could be my CV joints too (or gears). Scrap the truck, you have the best kind, extended cab long bed (i think).

Most people I have seen that do a 4.0 swap do a dash swap but since you have a gen 2 and a gen2 engine? going in, you may not have to, could be a plug and play as far as electronics.

i just did a 4.0 swap in my 84 and retained the gen one dash with a little bit of splicing. in your case you wont have to swap dashes and like dangerranger83 its almost plug and play. there is a couple good right ups in the tech section that will helpful with your swap.

Found a 98 Cherokee for cheap, wonder how hard it would be to swap the Jeep 4.0L to the ranger?? Might be more than I want to tackle but would be very interesting.

would be a lot of work and the ford 4.0 is stronger in my opinion. i've worked on both and would rather have mine! you gotta think transmission, computer, other electronics like sending units to your guages, fuel lines..
and yeah, you can swap the explorer 4.0 without the dash, i did.. just was a couple years ago before i was aware people did writeups of their own... so i didn't do any pics or anything lol. it wasn't a hard swap tho.

Yeah I knew it would be far fetched but would be an interesting build...

Also looking into buying a newer Ranger. Have been eying a 95 Ranger 4.0 4x4 manual trans extended cab splash bed for a good price. It is in GREAT condition for its age. Only thing is he wants $3500 for 189K miles
