Backfires out of the intake when accelerator is pressed, CEL comes on when pressing gas long enough, hard start( starts and dies until around fourth start), idles alright weirdly enough.

Everybody's going to ask you what codes are coming up. First thing that comes to mind for me is almost always catalytic converters, they are almost always discounted as being bad or going bad.

start it up in a dark spot and let it run. Look at the cat, if its cherry red its done.

I couldnt tell in the video...

But if its backfireing thru the intake its prolly the timing chain. Unless youve screwed with the dist.

I agree with rust ol ranger on this one. For it to pop through the intake the timing is off or a burnt/bad valve is the most likely cause. I would start by putting a timing light on it to be sure the timing is set correctly and if so move on to a vacuum test to look for a burnt valve. If a burnt/bad valve is detected do a compression test to find what cylinder is causing the issue.

Where do I find the timing marks?

So you going to start tearing into the engine without a code reader or doing Simple checks like fuel pressure, exhaust pressure, & vacuum?

On the harmonic balancer, the big pully on the bottom of the engine, the piece behind it. Be sure to unplug SPOUT connector before checking timing.

If timing checks ok, (10* BTDC), move on to doing a vaccuum test. When i did mine i pulled vaccuum right off the back of the upper intake (the part that says " 2.9L electronic fuel injection) reading should be steady around 17-19HG or whatever the unit is. A burned valve will show up during this test.

I doubt fuel pressure is your issue, but spec is 40psi KOEO.

The only sensor related thing i could possibly think of might be a TPS. RonD should be along to tell you how to test that.

That being said, pulling codes wouldnt hurt. Go to o reiley and get a digtial OBD1/EECIV reader. 30 bucks and well worth it. You can check it with a volt meter, but its hard to tell if your a newbie to EFI (which is why i spent the 30 bucks on the reader :) ).

You find the timing marks on the crank. you find out how to time with a SM.
