Recently got the idea to combine 2 of my "project" vehicles. I have an 89 ranger xlt 4x4 manual with a 2.9, and a 1966 ranchero with a 289 and c4. I also have a spare 289 and a 3 speed manual mated behind it. The ranchero was in a fire, so it's mainly for parts... my question basically is what will I be missing to do this swap. I can fabricate some things if needed to get the 289 in, but I'm more worried about transmissions. Will my 5 speed bolt up to a small block? Would I be better off using the c4? I'm not worried about 4 wheel drive, but making it functional is an added plus. This is going to be SUPER low budget, and somewhat thrown together, but it's just for fun! I've never done a swap like this before, so any added info is greatly appreciated! I'm just going to rip stuff out and stab it in! Not trying to get all the gauges to work or electronics, or even make it look super clean. It'll be an ugly lil monster in the end I'm sure. Rather learn about what troubles I'll encounter before I hit em, and from skimming through the V8 swap guide it seems somewhat easy if I'm not worried about making it perfect. (Not trying to make it dangerous... that's not what I mean by low budget. Just making it work with what I've got!)

Main thing your gonna need is a dual sump pan. This is a must. the front cross member will stop you from using the stock pan. You will also need to run a electric fuel pump as the mechanical hangs and tries to take the space of the power steering box (a inverted my work, but electric is easiest). You will also need a oil filter relocation kit (same reason as fuel pump). The C-4 will work (find a Dana 20 transfer case out of a early bronco or F-100. They were stock mated to the C-4's and make sure you get the adapter. It might bolt up to the 3 spd, but I dont know about those.Make sure the 20 is the hi/lo version as some were just 2wd/4wd hi. no ow range in this version). Your stock 5 spd wont bolt up. And your gonna need motor mounts (I used the James Duff mounts, a little pricey, but Ive never had any problems)
Do some research on what others have done to make the 289 fit (same thing for a 302 swap). Always seem to be a lot of little things that seem to arise. Lots of information out there, you will just have to do some searching. Good luck...
