You REALLY want to get the M5OD since you're replacing the trans anyway. You can find the M5OD in all manual trans Explorers and Navajos, 4.0 Ranger and B4000 Mazda pickups.
The most common one you'll find will be the 4.0 version which has the gears a bit more closely spaced than the 2.9 version.
Since you have an '89 (like mine ) it'll be easy to swap the 4.0 in when the 2.9 pukes. With the M5OD you'll be ready.
Hey, since we are already on the topic, does anyone know if the M5 will fit my 87? I'm mostly concerned about the location of the shifter hole. I know the trans lengths are different and i just want to make sure I'll still be able to shift through all 5 gears.
On an '87 you will have to EXTEND the floor at the FRONT of the factory opening that's under the plate.
Use an '88-up plate as a template the REAR edge and sides of the plate are
the same on the later plate and the ammount of material you have to remove
is smaller than a standard buisness envelope.
I forgot to mention that my 2.9 is an automatic. So although that's a good idea, but I'm trying to find the same tranny just to drop in. (Although I do have a 5.0 mustang engine and tranny ready to go when the 2.9 cracks it's heads and I get a new daily driver. )
