puttin 93 exploder 4.0 into ranger (89)2.9 ranger, have complete donor 93 explorer /want to use stock mazda trans in ranger
1)will the "automatic" ecu work
2) if no do i simply change to a manual shift ecu
3) or do i have to change engine harness and ecu

not trying to wear you out with beat to death questions, have spent hours doing research and these r a few questions i could not find answers to,

i am going to only run engine harness frome xplorer, will be running everything else ranger
this is a great forumn fullof info,i would never had attempted this without info on this site, any help is most certainly appreciated and will hopefully help others with thier projects, thanks in advance :dunno::headbang:

You can't run ONLY the engine harness.

Because in late 1990 ford changed the connectors between the main harness in the engine bay and the engine harness itself.

And even if they didn't the EDIS is not on the engine harness
on ANY 4.0 harness, it's on the main harness.

so you must get the WHOLE harness, every scrap of wire in the engine bay

The hard part of putting a 1993 harness into your 1989 is eliminating
the stuff you don't need, ABS, Power door locks rear window defogger
rear window wiper etc...

thanks for your reply alland, your reputation here proves u r a valuable source for knowledge and i appreciate all ur input

1) i have a comple 93 explorer with auto trans as a doner vehicle

they'll run the engine but will create little problems

2) my truck is an 89 rbv ext cab with 2.9

Mine was an '87 and I swapped a '93 engine in.

One little wrinkle you will encounter, the 1993 4.0 engine is a
"stand alone" year and that make the computers that will work and work CORRECTLY a narrow swathe... in short you need a 1993 Manual trans computer and the best one is coded "ANY1".
Another "wrinkle" is that while a 1990-92 4.0 would work perfectly with your exsisting Y-pipe your Y-pipe has one flaw... it only have one HEGO bung, in the collector, it needs TWO, one in each runner. OR you need a 1993-94 y-pipe.

The '93 is the first year that EEC4 had something called "active data link" where when a proper scanner was hooked upto it it doesn't simply give a pass/fail on the sensors, it actually displays a real time, actual value what the sensor is seeing, if the water temps is 188degF that's what the scanner sees, if it is claiming the air charge temp is 22F and you are sweating your
balls off it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figuire out that the sensor is fooked.

3) I want to perform the 4.0 swap and use my oe mazda trans,

It'll work fine depending on condition, just be nice to it in first gear
I'm reasonably sure the lower gear was a factor in the demise of my 2.9 Mazda trans (The output shaft SNAPPED OFF)

4) what would u recommend as far as gettin this package to work with my 5 speed manual,

Discard the 2.9 flywheel, clutch and seperator plate
You need the equivelent pieces from a 4.0.
the 4.0 NEEDS the heavier flywheel as much as it needs
the bigger clutch.
the smaller 2.9 clutch? set fire to the truck now, it'll be more satisfying than driving a 4.0 with a 2.9 clutch.

5 ) I can swap dash and entire harnesses from exploder if necassary, just trying to do it as simple as possible, been a atv,m/cycle watercraft tech for 17 years, with this forumns knowledge ,project should be achievable

Not necissary or desireable to swap the dash or entire harness,
but there will be a fat bundle of wires that you aren't going to be
using, I found uses for some of those wires, the fat orange one
(previously the power to the ABS pump) is the power to my Fog lamps

you MUST track down (ebay) the EVTM manual for both a 1993
Explorer and your 1989 Ranger, having them makes the job possible

6)I JUST DO NOT WANT TO RUN POS A4LD TRANS ,THANKS IN ADVANCE :icon_confused:
