Ok i have decided to do the swap... not going to happen anytime soon however i would like to be fully prepared...
89 b2... what is the best year 4.0 out of an ex to put in? I plan on getting the motor and having it on an engine stand for sometime so dont necessarily need a running one because i plan on taking it apart making sure everything is clean and in working order before installing anyway...
can anyone answer this question without directing me to one of the write ups people have done... what needs to be changed other than just the motor? Will the stock tranny be ok?
Obviously depends on how and where i get the motor but can anyone give me a good guesstimate on how much the overall project will cost?
Going to leave the 2.9 in for the winter seeing as its my only 4 wheel drive so will be looking for a motor the first part of the year...
and anyone with extensive knowledge on the 4.0 feel free to message me or leave a comment so i can get in touch with you as i am tearing down and rebuilding the 4.0...

When I did mine, I was very surprised on how easy it was, I gave up my power windows and locks, because that was the only thing that wasn't plug and play, if you have a manual trans, you'll have to get a 10" flywheel and clutch kit, and a 4.0 starter, I paid $60 for a new fly wheel, $140 for clutch kit, and traded starters at a pick and pull, my donor explorer was a 91 and I got it for $200,

Did you do what i am talking about and pull the 4:0 and clean it up and stuff before putting it in? What would be reccomended as far as working on/ rebuilding the 4:0 before install?

Valve cover gaskets. The good ones, not cork. And an oil pump. You can't replace that without pulling the motor. You could do other stuff if you would like, water pump, t-stat, ect.

I did replace oil pump, valve cover gaskets, plugs, wires, thermostat,
