89 2.9 tried to check timing no wont start

my ranger had starting running ruff so i decided to check the timing. i did not know anything about the sprout connector at the time. it was running great so i killed went inside washed my hands and now it wont start. any ideas?
 
Crank the engine around by hand until you get the lower pulley to TDC. Pop the distributor cap off. The rotor should be towards the riders side of the truck. If you are facing the truck, the # 1 spark plug should be the one closest to you on the left side. If the rotor is pointing towards the driver side then you need to crank the pulley around to TDC again. Line up the # 1 plug wire with the rotor. Now you should be able to start the truck again.
