I have a 89 ranger w/ 2.9 and i found a 4.0 from a 99 explorer. I'm curoius about the switch from OBDI-> OBDII and computer issues or other issues with the swap in?
You would need to swap out the entire engine harness, computer, sensors etc. You would need to make sure you got the exhaust and o2 sensors along with it. It would probably be easiest to find a complete donor vehicle and swap the entire dash harness as well.
I messed up my tranny, A4LD and was looking for a manual raplacement being the M5OD-R1, I found a complete explorer with 4.0 and M5OD and since that tranny is geared higher in 1-3rd gears the 2.9 might have some towing issues and it had always felt a littel under powered, but I didn't know how much of the wiring harness I'd have to change? as far as other asseccories with out freaking out the ECM
