my 88 ranger wont stay in 4hi, the po put in a 3in body lift, not mods to the shift lever. i use my grinder to adjust the floor pan to allow for proper shifting however when i shift into 4hi it doesnt fully engage. i believe it is the selection plate. if it is does anybody know how to adjust it? or any ideas what the issue might be?

Make sure the linkage is bolted tightly to the extension housing. If you pull the thing out you can see it is pretty simple and not much to adjust. There are plastic bushings that may be worn out, you might check them too.

I shift mine by the detent, not the plate. If I go by the plate it goes too far and makes hateful sounds... and I even changed to a totally different style linkage when I changed transmissions and it didn't change a thing.

Detent? The plate is set to far forward and won't allow me to fully shift into 4hi.I have checked the linkage it is OK from what I can tell. No play

Mine will go too far the other way, you can feel the detent as the t-case goes into gear but if you pull it to the stop it will go past that. So if I feel for the detent in the t-case I am good to go.

Anybody changed T-cases recently? They do have different levers on them.

EDIT:

Put the lever in 4hi and carefully remove the lever assembly without disturbing the lever going into the trans, see if it is getting into gear (detent) If it is there is probably something internally wrong with the t-case. While you have it off there is a square bushing that goes in the slot and snaps over the peg of the lever going into the t-case for wear or damage.

There are a bunch of pics of linkages here from my travels:
