I have an 88 Ranger w/ Mit 5-spd and 2.9 engine. I wanna do a 4.0 swap but i need to find out if my tranny will work or were there diff input shaft lengths that I need to be aware of?

Sorry-M code trans...Mazda

Be clearer about which trans you actually have and this is IMPORTANT to the correctness of the answers we give you.

The 2.9 and 4.0 share a bell housing pattern. All Ranger manuals share an input shaft length and spline count.

The mitsu and Mazda transmissions have different types of bearings in them. A Mazda trans (the 2wd tranny in 88) will survive just fine. The Mitsu trans (a 4x4 unit) will be torn to shreds in fairly short order.

Yes, I double checked the Trans code and it is M, which is the Mazda. So good to hear that it's good to go on the 4.0 swap. Now my question is, would it hold up under a 5.0 97 exploder motor, since it essentially is a Cobra motor. I've got the harness already and I know that I need an adapter for the trans to motor. Nobody around here drives with Manuals anymore...sigh. The truck is mainly a road vehicle in the Michigan and Northern Indiana winters. No off-road to speak of, but whose to say that wouldn't happen when I get the mods I'm doing done.

And it is a 2WD Long Bed with 4in front lift springs and 92 STX blocks in the back for snow clearance, adding 4" drop brackets this summer to correct front end alignment and hopefully changing to a 8.8 rear also, sorry to leave that tid bit out.
