So my 88 ranger disengages the 4x4 on its own, it slides back into 2Hi. along that note it also gets stuck in 4Lo and takes some forcing to get it out of 4Lo. does anybody know why it is doing this? I had to rig a bungee cord from the shift to the seat to keep it in 4Hi.

I had a problem with my 87 where the plate for the transfer case shifter was in the wrong position. This is the plate that limits the movement of the shift arm and forces you to push to the side to go between 4H and 4L.

With it positioned wrong, going from 2H to 4H it would fall back into 2H. It went into 4H but didn't get quite to the 4H detent.

It seemed to go into 4L fine for a long time, but then it started slipping from 4L to neutral.

I just adjusted the plate position. it is pretty easy to get at from the underside of the car coming from the drivers side. So easy from there I don't know why the shop manual says to do it after removing the boot and stuff at the top.

I shifted the plate back a bit and shifting to 4H it now goes into its detent and stays. Also it goes far enough back that it doesn't pop out of 4L.

The first part of your problem seems very similar to what I experienced. I didn't have the problem shifting to 4L so don't know if it is something different going on.

The only time I have had issues getting out of 4L was if there was a heavy load on it.

Yep, mine did that too, it just needs adjustment. To adjust it without having access to the manual I just shifted it to the 4H detent (shift it part way to neutral until you feel it stop just after pushing the shifter to the left) then climb under the truck and find the adjustment bolt, adjust the shift gate until the shifter is over where 4H should be (you can see where the shifter is in the gate from under the truck), it's a quick and easy process unless stuff is really rusty. I'm not sure on your 4L issue, but get it staying in 4H first then go from there.
