88 Ranger Carb Issue

I recently got my 88 Ranger on the road that I bought last year. The truck is hard starting when cold. Once it's warmed up it starts fine. I figured out that the accelerator pump on the carb sprays very little gas. I have to pump the pedal like 40 times just to get it to fire than another 40 pumps several times and finally it starts. Trying to decide what to do, rebuild the carb or swap it out for something else. By the way, over the years nearly every vacume line has been plugged off. Any help would be really appreciated.

swap to a weber 32/36, its been done a few times to replace the crappy aisan 2bbl carbs with good results.

Has the carb ever been cleaned or rebuilt? If not, then it's past due...a carb kit costs less than $30 and a good cleaning will take about an hour or so. If you've never had it off before, take some pix of it before you pull it. If you're queasy about working on a carb, you can probably get it cleaned and rebuilt locally for about $75...note: the tech/mechanic should be at least 45 years old, otherwise keeping looking.

While cleaning may help the solution, having had the same carb with similar problems (oh, let me count them out loud) I would suggest dumping the old one for what Cody suggested or something else...

I like my Motorcraft 5200 because of its simplicity and almost total lack of vac lines (which were mostly for emission controls so if you don't have to test for that then move on if you can)...maybe look around for a suitable intake or you can probably get an adapter fairly inexpensively.

I was considering the Holly 350 but I could not find one anywhere other than new (($500 in Canada plus another $100 for the adapter)...but they can be had new fairly inexpensively down your way (if, in fact you are down anywhere relative to Canada)...

Reidsville Bikes comes up in North Carolina so I'd say you are probably in the good ol' US of A...

Anyway...I was also going to say that an in-hose block heater might help you out too...I put one in mine because I was having the same symptoms...especially on cold days...it would crank till the battery died if it wasn't warmed up...but now after an hour or so on the block heater it fires up first time every time even on the coldest of days...still takes a few minutes to warm up to where it won't stall when I put it in gear, but that's a matter of patience...

What adapter? What intake are you running? The 350 bolts directly on to the D and Oval port intakes that the 5200 comes on. I recommend the 350, its a good choice. They are almost impossible to find in the U.S. used also.
