88 5 speed shifter?

I'm pulling the motor in my 88 and when I put it all back together I want to make a custom boot for the shifter on the transmission. However there's a brass cone I want to get off of the shifter because I figure it will look pretty goofy if it stays. Any way to get it off? I already pulled out the c clip rite underneath it but it changed nothing.
