88 2.9 v6 4X4 Automatic Ranger shifter linkage

Hello, my friend and I are dropping my ranger transmission. We can't figure out how to remove the shifter linkage. They appear to have small plastic housings that maybe snap off (and place new ones on?) We have halted the project until I get some more information on this issue. Anyone have any knowledge on this?

With my 92 we partly dropped the trans and then unbolted the bracket from the tranny.
