I have an 88 Ranger 2.9, 4x4, Manual. I bought an engine from the "Auto Salvage" (Guy there made a point to correct me when I told my mom on the phone that I was at the junkyard.). It was supposed to be for a 92 Explorer. It had a tag that said 94 Ranger. Anyway I do have the 92 Explorer ECU. It's a manual (F27F-12A650-TC code X2X2). I've read that connecting it to an auto wiring harness would FRY my ECU. Does anyone know why that is and what I could do about it. The closest harness I can find is for a 93 automatic Explorer. I'm sure I can eliminate the extra O2 sensor wiring and correct the pin(s) for the Diagnostic link. Just worried about the auto vs. manual thing right now.

I'm sure there will be more questions as I go along.

Thanks,

PS: How different are the EVTMs wiring diagrams from what's in the Chilton's manual?

Edit: I just found this http://forums.corral.net/forums/eec-tech/988291-automatic-five-speed-eec-iv-qeustion.html Does that make any sense to anybody here?

In automatic harnesses, pin 30 is wired to the starter solenoid, and there is a diode inside the automatic eec to control the voltage current during startup. Manual harnesses have pin 30 wired to the neutral safety switch and the eec doesn't have a diode there. Point? If you use an eec from a manual, you will need to cut the wire to pin 30 or you'll fry the EEC in a prolonged crank situation. You won't be able to pull codes if you do so.

^^^ This is what you were linking to? I have never heard this but I'm not up on this stuff. Hopefully someone else knows. Everything I've read points to both ecm's being somewhat usable but there are idle issues caused by NSS and/or clutch switch functions. Again, I have no hands-on knowledge.
Good luck,

Richard

It's ALIVE!

It's misfiring and I have to jump the relay to turn the starter. But, it runs.

Had some fun with the fuel lines. I had them backwards at first. :facepalm

IT now runs much better I had the O2 sensor wiring wrong.. The signal and signal ground wires were crossed. Of course i didn't figure this out till after I bout a new O2 sensor. Just need to finish up the wiring, add the $50 manual transfer case, get the tires put on and fix the exhaust. At that point I'll be ~$1400 invested and road worthy.

Good to Hear!
Now change that engine size under your avatar to a 4.0! :icon_thumby:
I cant wait to get mine done!

Thanks. I'll try to remember to change it when I get it registered and stop driving the 2.3. Need to change the pic too.. Not very different from that angle though.
