Here is an issue with my truck. It is a 88 Ranger with the 2.9 and my gas gauge and speedometer does not work, of course :D. Now what I want to know is a couple of days ago I ran out of gas. I fill it up again it takes forever for it to crank. I don't get any gas or air flow from the fuel rail when cranking, but it will slowly build up. Is this the pump being weak, the fuel filter being clogged, or a combo of these?
I know that sometimes it will stall during takeoff sometimes.

Can you hear the fuel pump priming when you put the key in the ACC position. I believe that your truck has two fuel pumps one in the tank and one on the rail. I beleive I would check the easy stuff first like the fuel filter, fuel relay, inertia switch and fuel pressure regulator.

I've had the same thing happen to me once. My gas gauge also doesn't work, so I ran out of gas once while I wasn't paying attention to the mileage. Fortunately, I had JUST pulled into a gas station. I filled it up completely, but it took a few minutes of cycling my ignition and cranking to finally get it to fire up. I haven't had any other problems. So it seems the starting issue after running out might not be a huge issue... not sure about the stalling, though.

I can hear the pumps, regulator is new, relay seems to be fine, inertia switch good, but it sounds like the pump on the frame makes a weak then strong intermittent sound. I will probably replace the filter and then see what happens. Since cash/time is limited, it might be a little while before I get to replacing the filter.

Thanks for the help, I greatly appreciate it. :icon_thumby:

cause I m so cheap and my labor is free!! I blow out old gas with my mouth kind of hard at first. if a glass jar is sitting around i put it in that just to see what comes out and checking how hard it is to blow through when relatively empty. then compare to new one, then i decided to put old one back on or replace. But like i say im pretty cheap!!!
then looking at glass jar loking to see it there is any water seperation etc.
