My new to me 88 (2.9 5SP 4x4) dies when hot. Let it cool off and it will start and run fine.

Here's what I know about the truck: THe guy I bught it from said it was originally an automatic, he changed it to the 5speed. Supposedly it has a slight miss and rattling lifters.

Monday driving it home it died. Lost power going down the road. When I got back to it probbaly 45 minutes later with my F150 and a chain; it started so I drove it about 8 miles when it died again (3/4 mile from home).

We pulled it home and chcked the coil, it was good but the truck wouldn't start. The next morning it started for about five seconds. I checked the TFI module; it was iffy so a new one went on.

Still no start. Found the fuel pump relay was bad, $16.07 later the truck ran fine.

This morning I drove it to get safety inspected and licensed. It ran fine until I was about 5/8 mile from home, then lost power and died. (It isn't getting better, I was going faster today and coasted farther).

Pulled it home again, two hours later it starts in the driveway and revs up fine.

Right now I am thinking the intank low pressure pump is getting ready to go out??? I can hear the high pressure pump, but haven't had a helper to listen for the low pressure one.

The Emissions light was on for a while this afternoon, so I am going to try to pull codes just for fun :icon_confused:

I put about 80 miles on it today, and it is over 100* today.

The funny thing is, it is getting 21 mpg. I just need it to stay running.

Any help or ideas will be appreciated,

Robert

Turned out to be the intank low pressure fuel pump. I replaced it today and the truck runs better than I have seen it run.

I will check the mileage later.....
