My dad has a '87 Ranger ex. cab 5spd 4x4 and is thinking about swappin' the 2.9L for a 3.0L out of a '94 Aerostar. we were wondering if it could be done using the 5spd, flywheel, clutch, and the oil pan off the 2.9L ????
Also we have a 4.0L out of a '94 Mazda Navajo (2 door Explorer) if it would be any easier to do.

What will we have to change to make the 4.0L fit besides motor mounts. My dad said he did'nt care if the hood won't shut he'll just cut a hole in it and put a hood scoop on it.

I really don't have anything to contribute to your swap..............but your Dad seems pretty cool!

the 4.0 uses the same Motor mounts and trans bellhousing, and the 4.0 clutch will fit the 2.9 trans input shaft, you will need to use the 4.0 starter. the y pipe off of the 2.9 will work as well. The wiring is really the only part that could get interesting if you don't have good wiring diagrams for the donor and recipient.

only one problem, the4.0 has an automatic behind it. so I take it that we will have to find a 4.0 flywheel, clutch, and starter. other than the wiring it should just drop in, right??

the wiring isn't plug and play I take it.
