I have an '87 ranger with a 2.9 that I've owned since it was new. over the years I've replaced just about every sensor, pressure regulater, filters, both pumps and a lot more. Dealers and garages have been no help. it started on a trip when I went from 28 mpg to 20 mpg. Frequently I have to pull over to the side to 'blow it out'. It has gotten worse. Ford says they have never heard of this. I have talked to many who have had the exact same symtoms and no one could repair it. One of these people was a CSR for Ford and she had to finally get rid of it at around 12.000 miles. Any real world experience out there. I've had enough theory. I want someone who has experienced this and had it repaired, not someone who simply has an idea - I've had enough of those.

Sounds like a blown head gasket. Did it ever overheat?

Need more details.

Have you had a compression check and a leak down check? Results?

Tested the coolant for exhaust gases? Do you lose coolant?

Have you run the computer for any codes?

Exhaust restriction? A lot of shops use the hi tech thermometers, point and read, to find blockages.

Are you saying it has run like this for years?

Oh, and Welcome to The Ranger Station. Tell us more about "what hasn't fixed it".

hmmm

I would start at the exhaust manifolds and install a COMPLETE new exhaust system on it.
