87 2.9 5speed to ovh 4.0 with same 5 speed

was curious if this would be a simple swap? there is a 87 (reg cab long box) 2 blocks from my house for $300 that is in decent shape with the common 2.9 head issues. I have 4 - 4.0 L engines at my disposal (complete with wire harnesses) and started thinking that an 87 with a 5 speed with a 4 in front of it could be fun.... (still have my 410 cam engine sitting doing nothing that would work nicely in this truck))

will the engine bolt straight up to the 2.9 5 speed bell housing or are there other issues i will encounter?

The transmission is the same transmission, but the more you look at the one for the 4.0 vs the 2.9, the more differences you see (asuming this is a mazda tranny) because the bell housings have different shapes between engines and the gearing is all different inside. I say pull one out of a jy if you can and and rebuild it if need be.

It will bolt right up. It just won't be as strong as the m50d found behind the 4.0l from the factory

just what i need.... another project, but this should be a pretty easy weekend job when i get around to the swap .... LOL right... nothing is easy

2.9l was a Speed Density system, using a MAP sensor for determining air volume for fuel mix.

4.0l's were all mass air flow systems using MAF sensor, so along with computer and harness you will need MAF sensor, which was on the air filter box in 4.0l engine bay

Well we went and looked at the truck, pictures sure can hide alot of probs...lol we offered $200, the body has a bunch of major cancer coming through it and it is defiantly a winter beater as it is... Angie said she will use it as a local running around town truck, toss the dogs in the back and take them for a drive to the park type of truck. the 2.9 that is in it will run for another 30K the way it is.... who knows if he will go for it or not, my guess is he just wants it out of the driveway.... thanks for the info guys... maybe it would get a new to frame motor one day and he was impressed with the idea....LOL
