Hi guys, my buddy just bought a 86 Ford ranger with the 2.9 v6 and everything was great until today. The truck wouldn't start, it would just crank and crank, we jumped it with my truck and it fired right up:confused: so we drove it for about a mile and on the way back home it started spitting and sputtering and eventually died. We can't figure this problem out, one of our friends said injectors but that just doesn't make since, it won't start unless it has jumper cables on but it will crank normally. Any input would be great.

Have you checked the battery, alternator, starter, and all connections. Sounds like you have a problem in one of those areas.
I had a similar problem when I bought my 86 ranger. Would die every time I turned on the brights or wipers. I replaced the battery cables and haven't had a problem since.
Good luck

take off the battery cables and clean them with a wire brush and a tooth brush. That should work. Maybe even spray some of that protectant. I had a problem with my old truck that it would fire up when i put jumper cables on it, then electronics wouldn't function completely and then i couldn't get it start after i turned it off. Battery terminals were corroded, but not that bad

Yeah i second all that, i had a similar problem when i accidentally forgot to plug in all the connections on the alternator could run for 30 seconds or so then just sputtered out and died, check all that and then if it still does it have your alternator tested.
