I need to remove the manual transmission from my 2.9 L ranger. Do I HAVE to remove the Y-Pipe? Is there a way to jimmy the transmission up and around the pipe?

we never yanked the engine to change manifolds, we never even changed em. we cut the bolts out with a torch, drilled out the holes and put new bolts in.

There is always the 4 cab bolts.
Leave the radiator support ones alone, acting as the pivot.
Take the 4 cab bolts out, pry the cab up enough to slip a couple chunks of wood to shim it up. The cab bolts aren't as bad to remove as bed bolts.

Hit the exposed threads (underneath) with a wire wheel and clean the rust and crud off, spray with penetrating oil and go at them. Once you get them broken loose, just wedge a breaker bar inside the cab and run the nuts off from underneath. That's 2/3 of the work of putting in a body lift, by the way.

It'll get you the room you need, forever if you add spacers and do the fronts too.

BINGO. Thanks! I didn't even think about this. Worked beautifully. I was really not looking forward to messing with broken manifolds (one has a broken "ear") or the associated bolts. The studs for the body mounts were real clean, didn't even need to soak them.
