I recently got 86 ranger 4x4 2.9 5 speed. Got off a friend was not running but knew motor ran. When tring to start fuel pumps not working and one was new and the other changed at some point not real old though but anyway the fuel pump shut off switch is what i thought was the problem. Changed it and pumps ran and truck fired right up and ran beautiful even after sitting for two years was surprised. Until 20 min later it starting acting like it was running out of gas and quit and the fuels pumps would no longer work. The next day with out doing a thing but hit key it did the same thing 20 min died. Let it sit again and the next time ran for hour and a half no problem . shut it off went and got 5 gallon gas put in it started up ran but would not idle had to keep little pressure on gas then acted like starve for gas and died no more fuel pump the next morning fired right up moved it drove around yard and pulling back in driveway fuel pumps quit and have not worked again since tried new relay no luck no blown fuses and tried reset on shut off switch no luck . I ve been pulling hair out to figure this out all grounds that i can find are good and only have 7 volts going in to shut off switch. Is it supposed to have 12 volt ?? Any input would be good hope you can help stop the going crazy:bawling: Thanks

actually, based on my experience: todays fuel has alcohol in it witch attracts water like mad. said water tends to rust everything in the fuel system after 6 months sitting in the driveway. you have several fuel filters to look at, but first replace the main injection one after the pump right around the left cross member. the other problem which is running really lean after 2 to 5 minutes is something I'm still working on, and I will publish findings when I fix it.

still no pump

ok so i put new ignition module on inertia switch relay and checked over all wiring and now when you hit key relay clicks and no pump turn key off relay clicks if i pull wiring on left inner fender apart single wire plug on male end then two wire female under master cyclinder and hook direct power pumps run truck starts and will run beautiful all day so any more help would be great

you could also ground the last wire on the right of the red diagnosis plug which will cause the relay to fire the fuel pump.
II II
I i II II <<< that one right there

if that didn't work, then you'd have wiring problems which I think you have guessed. I believe there is also a fuse either in the dash or otherwhere (sorry, i'm old and forgetful as to which one, but it should say fuel pump, i think and be like a yellow fuse)

i replaced the module with new one i know its possible to get new parts that are bad but hasn't happened to often but if when i ground on spot on the diagnose plug and relay kicks and pumps work what does that mean ?

still at the problem

so i ground the last spot on the diagnose plug and the fuel pumps work no problem and truck will run fine but the pumps will run no matter if key on or off while grounding that spot any more info would be great thanks

fixed

ok after two weeks i finally figured it out after rechecking all wiring the only option was ecm so i borrowed one off a friend and everything worked as it should so figured out and now fixed thanks for the help :yahoo:
