86 ranger 2.9 5 speed manul 4.0 engine swap

does the 4.0 mount up to the tranny and if so what wiring do i need to change... can i get away with a comp swap and will it move the tranny back or forward or will it sit the same and i wont have to mess with the 4x4 crap too much please give me what info you guys can i have a fried who want to pay me to do this and im doing the reasearch befor i even dig in

My experience is with an auto tranny so not sure if it will be the same but I can answer a few of your questions. If you disconnect the ECM and unplug the connector to the firewall on the drivers side, then with a little bit of work you can remove the engine wiring harness to include ECM connector, Passenger side fuse block, headlight connectors, and maybe a few others I'm missing right now all the way around to the connector on the drivers side firewall. The wiring harness on the engine for the sensors and injectors are all going to a couple of plugs that unplug from the main harness. You will also want to be sure to unplug the 02 sensor. I pulled my motor and tranny out together after removing the radiator and disconnecting the cat. converter. A lot easier than dropping the tranny and removing the engine.

So now the only question is will your manual tranny from the 2.9 work on the 4.0

With the automatics they will both bolt up, but the 4.0 tranny has the parts to handle the extra torque. Not sure of the case with the manual transmissions.

so i can leave a bunch of the wiring stock in the cab and its mostly enginge wiring im dealing with? i just need to pull the ecm and the wiring with all that

I would suggest getting a donor vehicle. I did basically the same swap with a 86 BII. You're gonna want a 4.0 Tranny But your 2.9 tranny will bolt to the 4.0

The 2.9 tranny technically bolts up to the 4.0 block... Being that it won't have the M50D it would be surprising to see it last very long under the 60 or so extra ft/lbs of torque the 4.0 generates... Short answer, yes, it bolts up, no I wouldn't do it... I'd get a donor vehicle that way you have every part you need...

I think the 5 speeds would hold up pretty well, I've been looking into doing this for a while, I hear it's the easiest way to go, and with the manual tranny, if it bolts up and you don't have the time to put in a new tranny and try to find a manual donor explorer (good luck) just drive easy on it, with a manual tranny you control what everything is doing
