Hi all, so I have a new truck. feels good, has a bit of a clack though.
Also found today an exhaust leak before the turbo. upon closer inspection it is missing a bolt to hold down the exhaust manifold.

the intake is all thread in bolts. the exhaust is all studs coming out of the(head or block?) with a nut holding down the manifold.

so the farthest from the front has just one stud of the two holding it down. The stud itself is missing.

Question: What am I likely to find under the manifold? A broken off stud? or a threaded hole missing it's stud? Forgive my ignorance...

Thanks, more questions to come eventually!

stick something in the hole to see how deep it is. i've used everything from a phillips screwdriver to a thinner bolt to a toothpick, depending on how much clearance i had.

or maybe you can angle a mirror under there to see if you can get a peek in there.

the deeper the hole the more likely the stud(and nut) are just missing. also the chances are better that you'll be able to just thread in another fastener.

It seems there is a hole, maybe 3/4" deep below the thickness of the manifold.
so the whole stud is missing.?
I should look at replacing the gasket and the stud, or all the exhaust studs? if I need to remove the whole manifold, are the studs a one time use or something?

Thanks much

Jesse

at 3/4", it seems like the stud is absent.

what a "professional" would do= get another stud and nut, thread in the stud, then properly torque the nut.

what i probably would do= find a bolt long enough to accommodate the manifold, a washer, a lock washer, and the 3/4" depth.

what i actually did in a similar situation= nothing.

i would recommend finding a correctly sized bolt and trying to thread it in before you buy a stud and nut for it(if you plan on replacing stud and nut), just to make sure that the threads in the hole aren't damaged. i don't know what size that would be. you can check out the dealer or a parts store or i'm pretty sure another member here has that information.

studs aren't usually a one time use, but the heat of exhaust leaves just about every exhaust system fastener at the mercy of getting frozen in place, usually the nut frozen to the stud, which many a time leaves a hard to grip piece of the stud sticking out of the head when the stud breaks while trying to remove the nut. however, the fastener(s) in your picture seem to be in good shape. if you ever need to remove the manifold, blast all the fasteners with some kind of penetrating oil(PB blaster seems to be the one of choice among most members here). that way there is less chance of the studs coming out(or breaking) vs. the nut coming off the stud.

Find a bolt that fits (i use grade 8), put anti seize on the threads, put it in.
