Hello, I have an '86 B2 with the 2.9 and an A4LD. It is a 4x4 with a manual shift transfer case. Heres the problem:

When I'm in park, and shift to drive (overdrive) the truck wont move. It doesn't even idle down like its in gear. I rev it up a little, but it still doesn't go anywhere. At this point I would try reverse or drive and it still won't move(and that high idle). I have to shut off the truck, wait a minute, restart and than I'm able to shift into reverse or any of the other forward gears (except overdrive). It drives and shifts great if I put it into 3rd (not overdrive) and I can actually shift into O.D wile I'm driving(and the OD works), but if I let the truck slow down (to 30 mph) and I don't down shift into 3rd, the truck is once again unable to accelerate and I must come to a stop and repeat the first proceedure. I assume I have a converter lock up problem, or a 3-4 shift solenoid problem, but obviously that's just my best guess.

I bought the truck half a year ago, completely stock, and I have no idea how many times the odometer has gone around. I don't know any history on this thing, but the tranny and pan are awfully clean looking compared to the rest of the truck. It leaks fluid, but I keep checking and adding as needed. It will be a project truck, but I would would like to make use of the stock drivetrain while I search for a replacement. (D35, 8.8 rear, gears, 3.0 or 4.0 swap, would like to stick with an automatic.) Currently it has a 3" body lift, and about half way through a body job and some 33's waiting for the appropriate amount of suspension lift.

Thanks for listening, hope to hear some "easy to repair" news!

Colin

Anyone have some advice on this? Is the tranny toast, or should I start trying to figure it out? Thanks, Colin
