got a 1986 2.9 4x4, lifted 9 inches, 6 inch suspension, 3 inch body. its made from multiple trucks. the rear are ranchos. the front are skyjackers. cost 600 bucks. it has 190k miles. on a 5 speed with a manual t-case.

when i drive it, it randomly dies. and it always starts back up. then i was goin down the high way in 5th and it just died. every time i turn the key it just clicks.

left it on the road for a night. came back and it started right up drove it about 3 miles. realized it had a horrible knock. checked the oil its black as black can be. drove it another mile and it died again. and it still just clicks.

got her towed home. any suggestions?

i'd start with the battery for the clicking sound, then check the alternator. sitting overnight leads me to believe that gives the battery a chance to recoup some of it's power during the rest. may be bad or not getting enough current from the alternator.
the knock is a whole different animal. with oil that black, sounds like it's been driven like it was stolen by the po. hopefully, there is no permanent damage done and a good motor flush and fill with good oil will take care of it. and i'd plan on changing all the fluids in the cooling system, both pumpkins, tranny, transfer case, and lubbing the whole chassis really good. good luck to you on this one.

Yea It sounds electrical but i've never had shut off without giving some type of warning like the battery light coming on. Mine would shut every now a then a couple years ago but it would crank and just not fire found out it was the wire for the fuel pump. This may sound retarted but check to see if theres a belt. The truck can run beifly without one until the battery dies.

See if it will turn over with a wrench on the harmonic balancer or by turning with the belt. What i'm saying is is it seized?

sorry for no reply lost my internet.

i pulled the valve covers off. and there was chunks of shavin metal. burrs from the burrfield it sat in. and sludge, just like the crap u see in the commercials. and it threw a rod. which messed up the block.

i have a 4.0 with 60k miles on it. can get a rebuilt 5 speed for the 4.0 for 800 bucks with 1k miles on it. im thinkin about swappin it out for a 4.0. how hard would this be? would the transfer case mount up to the new tranny? im not exactly sure of what all id need to perform this. but i have a brief idea. i can also get a 2.9 with 140k miles for 500 bucks..
