My 86 has this random sputter it does whenever I'm idling at red lights. It doesn't do it all the time but just every so often it will sputter and sometimes it'll sputter till it stalls itself out. I figured if it was a tuning issue with plugs or wires it would do it when sitting still or moving but this might sputter once and not do it for a week then it'll sputter at every red light for the whole day. My usual idling Rome is 1000 but when it starts to sputter it'll drop to bout 500 and the Tom's will bounce up and down until either the truck fixes itself or it cuts off. Any idea what it could be? It is a manual transmission if that helps anything.

I've seen this pop up here and there and actually, I'm getting the same thing if I sit in traffic for a really long time. My problem gave me a code and I'm currently chasing that "fuel pump circuit fault"

Have you tried looking for codes?

No haven't tried that I haven't gotten a check engine light so i never thought to try the code reader but ill have to give it a try.

Yeah that's bout exactly what mine is doing it'll sputter randomly then the engine will correct itself and it'll idle fine for a little while then it'll sputter some more

I seen the comment says something bout the distributor cap is that what's wrong with it or is that just their guess

Thats is probably just his guess. I just replaced the heads on my truck and it does the same thing, i have no idea what it is.

Yeah I was just gonna redo the whole fuel system starting with the lines and filter then the spark plugs and wires clean the injectors everything till it quits doing it... I thought bout going up to the parts store and let them read my computer and see if there is a trouble code but I don't know if advance auto can read trucks as old as mine. If the trouble says fuel pump ill yank that sucker out and put in a new one its pissing me off :annoyed:

How about the egr valve? Think this could cause it. I wouldn't know I just seen somewhere that another member had the same problem and he said it was his egr valve.

I have a complete 87 ford ranger that I bought for $300 that has a blown head gasket so anything yall think might be the issue I got. ill go take it off the parts truck to see if it helps and if it does then ll know what the issue is.

Idle air control valve, throttle position sensor, MAP sensor, TFI module would be my first guesses.
