My goal is fuel economy:

92,000 miles and the exhaust is ready to be changed. Should I stick with the standard 2" or go up to 3"?

Also can you run without a muffler or should it stay on? Right now I'm basically running straight pipe (broke off in the middle of the truck) and its not a whole lot louder.

One last Q: Does the exhaust affect the vaccum brake booster in anyway? Less vaccum with less back pressure maybe?

Thanks!

stick with 2''.you won't gain anything unless you're boosting the power, and you said economy is your goal.

the vacuum for the brakes is supplied from a seperate pump.nothing you do to the intake or exhaust will affect it.

Without getting all technical, there is a formula for figuring diesel exhaust size that takes into account displacement, power, torque, etc. The correct size of exhaust that will provide the proper back pressure is 2.5 inch exhaust. The stock 2 inch exhaust is way to restrictive.

Thanks guys, I figured I would get a quick response!

I'm going to be changing the timing belts soon (not sure when they have been done) anything I should do why I have it torn apart? Leave the timing stock? Turn up the pump?

Thanks again.

I've been robbed.........

My 86 2.3 td has got 1 3/4 inch exhaust....:icon_twisted:

I would recommend leaving the timing stock and leaving the pump where it is at. By turning up the pump you increase the EGT's and that's the main killer of these engines. Ifyou are looking for a nice HP and TQ increase, add an intercooler and then turn up the fuel. Not only will you gain performance but it will lower your EGT's.

If you do plan to increase the fuel or advance the timing, install a Pyrometer so you can safely monitor the EGT's. Installing a Pyro should be the first mod you ever do to a diesel engine.
